Upon a red cliff looking east, overlooking the Gulf of Castellammare, ( used as a trading route by the Phoenicians, Greeks and Romans) lies the ancient fishing village of Scopello located a few kilometres above the town of Gulf of Castellammare, in the province of Trapani. Scopello was once utterly remote ( see The Ten Pains of Death by Gavin Maxwell, who came here in 1953). "When I first came to Scopello", he begins " I thought it was the most beautiful place I had ever seen".

A seventeenth century Bennistra tower (now a hotel) is set on an previous Arabian house, surrounded by, a paved square, a watering-place of stone and few houses, is overlooking green valley. Scopello is perhaps the most colourful place on the entire gulf of Castellamare.

The outlet to the sea is beautiful, huge stacks above on this end of coastline creating a natural shelter for the old Tonnara (tuna fishery) in disuse for years but in excellent condition.

Also named Theatre of history, Scopello and its territory is surrounded by an aura of mystery fed by legends and stories of the old.
