When driving on the A29 Palermo-Mazara del Vallo, take the exit for Castellammare del Golfo, and continue in the direction of Trapany until you reach the ramp to Scopello. There the coastline becomes rocky and where the Mediterranean, that most natural of the sculptors, has worked miracles, you can find the natural reserve “Lo Zingaro” www.riservazingaro.it .

This park is one of the most picturesque and untouched places of western Sicily situated along the coast for seven km between San Vito, overlooked by the Tyrrhenian Sea, in the west and Scopello in the east.

The reserve offers landscapes of incomparable beauty being windswept and weather-beaten shaped on a coastal sea, rough yet azure clear, with small bays with delightful pebbly beaches. Comprising patches of Mediterranean vegetation Lo Zingaro has been shaped by nature, to become a unique paradise for tourists seeking beauty. Without moving far from the coast, the landscape becomes mountainous, culminating, from south to north, in the mountain crests: Scardina, Speziale, Passo del Lupo and Acci with its dolomite crest.

Zingaro is extremely important for the abundance of rare and endemic plants, local fauna and the spectacular Uzzo Grotto, one of the first human settlements in the area.Take the trip if you are in the area, whatever  the season!
